Родился 10 октября 1964 года в Ижевске. Там же закончил Ижевский университет, отделение художественной графики по мастерской Народного художника РСФСР,
лауреата Государственной премии РСФСР имени И. Е. Репина, лауреата Государственной премии Удмуртской АССР, профессора Алексея Павловича Холмогорова.
В настоящее время Сергей Холстинин преподает живопись в том же университете.
Работы находятся в частных собраниях в России и США.
